How to Make Your Bouquet Last Longer: Expert Tips from a Local Farm & Florist

There is nothing quite like the scent and color of a fresh bouquet brightening up your home. Because we grow our flowers right here on our Ramarama farm and harvest them daily, they already have a head start on freshness compared to imported stems.

However, once they leave our hands and head to your vase, a little bit of "flower therapy" goes a long way. Here is how you can keep your blooms looking vibrant for 7–10 days (or even longer!).

1. Start with a "Squeaky Clean" Vase

Bacteria is the number one enemy of fresh flowers; it clogs the stems and prevents them from drinking. Before you even reach for the water, ensure your vase is scrubbed clean. A quick rinse with a dash of bleach or a run through the dishwasher is the best way to ensure a healthy environment for your bouquet.

2. The 45-Degree Snip

Before placing your flowers in water, trim about 2cm off the bottom of each stem. The trick? Cut at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stem from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase, which can block water intake.

3. Strip the Submerged Leaves

Check for any leaves that will sit below the water line and remove them. Leaves left in the water will rot, creating that cloudy, smelly water that invites bacteria. Keep the stems clean and the water clear!

4. Use Lukewarm Water & Flower Food

Most flowers prefer room-temperature or slightly lukewarm water, as it’s easier for them to absorb than ice-cold water. Don’t forget to add the flower food packet provided with your Flowers on Ramarama delivery—it contains the perfect balance of sugar for energy and acidifiers to maintain the water’s pH.

5. Location, Location, Location

While flowers love the sun while they’re growing on our farm, they prefer the shade once they’re in a vase. To prevent them from wilting prematurely, keep your bouquet away from:

  • Direct sunlight
  • Drafty heaters or air conditioners
  • The fruit bowl (Ripening fruit, especially bananas, releases ethylene gas which causes flowers to age rapidly!)

6. The "Every Other Day" Rule

If you want to be a true flower pro, change the water and re-trim the stems every two days. Fresh water is the simplest secret to a long-lasting arrangement.
